Something to think about Nugget” Calendar Days”

Have you ever wondered why it has to be a certain time of the year for our world to acknowledge what is called “Important dates” Dates that have been placed and on calendars worldwide.  You don’t see  boxes of red hearts until Valentine’s Day.  You don’t hear sounds of fire crackers until Independence Day.  You don’t hear much about turkeys until Thanksgiving Day.  You don’t hear people playing Christmas music all year round until the actual season.  My point is if it’s not the actual holiday or observance day, a person would be considered strange if they celebrated or acknowledged these days before its time.

Well in my opinion expressions of love should be daily, we shouldn’t need fire crackers to remember our independence, especially as hard as our forefathers worked toward it.  I can and do eat turkey all year round and finally, I play Christmas music whenever because I like it.  So what about you?  Have you allowed this world to dictate to you when you should do as it is printed on the calendar?

With all this in mind let’s look at what the calendar has pinpoint we should be acknowledging now.   A time when churches are full, new clothes are purchased, stuffed bunny rabbits, jelly beans and plastic or cooked eggs are seen everywhere.  A time the world calls Easter and the church calls Resurrection Sunday.

Resurrection Sunday, the time that’s remembered of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  How he suffered, bled, died and rose on the third day.  But before we get there we must remember “Good Friday”.  During this time all churches is acknowledging the last seven sayings of Christ on the cross.  Everybody is having a program and every year it seems the same things are said.  We get so excited with these last sayings, that is until the weekend is gone and then it seems to be forgotten until the next year.

I was asked to preach on “Good Friday” from St. Luke 23:43 which states “today you will be with me in paradise”.  Here is when Jesus is talking to the thief on the cross who asks Jesus to remember him when He comes to His kingdom.  Well for the first time this passage struck me differently.  The man asks just to be remembered but Jesus goes farther and states not only will I remember you but you will be with me.  Also this man was not like the two disciples that secretly got Jesus by Himself and asked if they could sit on the right and left side of Jesus in the kingdom (Mark 10:37) or even worst their mother asked Jesus the same question (Matt 20:21).  No this man just wanted to be remembered.  Lastly, when Jesus said what He said to this man, in my spiritual imagination I could hear Satan saying, “this Jesus is on the cross dying and He is still saving, still snatching my prey.  I was preaching and I got so excited and the weekend is over and I’m still excited.  Excited that Jesus is still saving souls and snatching them from the hands of Satan.  So even though it has its place on the calendar, it’s still occurring throughout the whole year in the entire world.
